EU Nations Cup 2022

England’s senior men’s water polo team were back in action this week in Group A matches against Austria, Wales, Basque Country and the USA.
Group B contains the hosts Czech Republic with Luxembourg, Lithuania, Portugal and Sweden.
England ultimately finished fifth. John Pratt was England’s top scorer in the competition, netting twelve in four games, including a double in the play-off match for 5th place with Sweden.
The group stages took place over the first two days of the competition before the playoff games on Sunday where the winners of each group faced off in the final.

In a tight play-off match for 5th place, England and Sweden were level at 5-5 at the halfway stage before England took control of the game late on with three goals in the final quarter to put the game out of Sweden’s reach.
On the team’s performance, coach Tim Dunsbee said: “After a very tough opening game against event winners USA, we settled and developed our polo game by game. The team improved throughout the tournament and I was delighted with the attitude and effort levels of all of our athletes. We have high expectations of where the team can, and needs to be. To get to this level will take time with a long term programme of focussed training, support and competition.”

The youthful England team is led by Olympian Matt Holland and are looking to build on their success at the recent Home Nations Tournament in May. At the Home Nations event in Coventry, England took three wins from three, defeating Wales (21-2), Ireland (10-6) and Scotland (13-7).
England’s squad in Brno will be coached by Tim Dunsbee with Ian Elliot as team manager.
Ahead of the competition Dunsbee said: “We are looking to build on the foundations of our successful performance in the Home Nations Tournament. This is a young developing team led by former Olympian goalkeeper and team captain Matt Holland, who have a bright future in the sport.”
After the tournament England will be back in action on 9 July for a friendly against Team GB’s London 2012 Olympic Team in London.
