Conference helps shape the future of water polo

Sunday 6 September 2009 - Crowne Plaza Hotel, Birmingham NEC

The aim of the ASA and British Swimming’s free Water Polo Conference entitled “Your Sport – Help Shape the Future” was to involve and get input from the water polo community from grass roots to elite level across the Home Countries to identify what is needed to take the sport forward and develop a World Class Talent Development System for water polo.

The three focus areas the conference looked to address through workshops were Clubs, Coaches and Leadership, asking the questions; ‘Where are we now?’ ‘Where do we need to be?’ and ‘How can we achieve this?’

Howard Cartwright, British Swimming Water Polo Chair: “After some difficult and disappointing times, there is a great chance for water polo in Britain to take some real steps forward. This is not only in respect of the ambition to ensure that we have two competitive teams in 2012 but also to secure the future of the game at a high and continuously improving level.

“There are some huge hurdles to overcome but with the joint efforts of the many committed volunteers, working in unison with the governing bodies, then now is the opportunity. This conference provided the chance to participate in setting a positive agenda for change. ”

Delegates were able to choose to attend workshops focusing on Coaches, Clubs or Leadership.

British Water Polo now has a strategic plan in place for 2009-2013 which builds upon the progress since gaining UK Sport funding in 2006 and tackles the challenges facing us through to the next Olympics, amending the existing systems to ensure a more focussed professional organisation.
