16-year-old water polo player Samantha Barker is celebrating after being chosen to receive Asda’s Sporting Chance grant for 2010.

The Trinity School (Carlisle) pupil, who was picked because of her outstanding performance, will receive a grant of £500 as well as ongoing support from the supermarket at Kingstown, which she visited to show her appreciation.

A keen swimmer from an early age, Samantha took up water polo when she was eight and joined Carlisle Water polo Club. Discovering a natural talent for the game, she then began to train with the regional team at Lancaster and last year she was selected for the Great British youth team.

The teenager has her sights firmly set on the world championships next year and one day dreams of participating in the Olympics.

Asda Carlisle general store manager Alison Hanford said: “Sporting Chance has been supporting young British athletes for three years now and we are delighted that Samantha is the latest young talent to benefit from the scheme. Alongside the grant, we hope to raise as much money as we can over the year to be able to help her with travel, equipment and training and give her as much encouragement as we can.”

Samantha and 42 other young sports stars gathered in Manchester for a workshop hosted by elite athletes for SportsAid and Asda to help the Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls realise their dreams
