In a surprise announcement on 15 October 2018, Phil Winstanley, who took the lead on Performance Pathway for Swim England’s Water Polo Management Group, has announced his deision to step down from the volunteer Group after more than 3 years in post.
Phil said, “I have had a fantastic few years watching polo and the last few years trying to make a difference. There are an unbelievable number of dedicated volunteers in this sport who are giving up significant time for the sport they love. However, I simply don’t have the time to pursue such a futile cause when the governing bodies seem intent in pushing any financial decisions into the long grass. Without significant funding there is no national programme which is open to all, but only for those who are able to afford it. Perhaps now is the time for someone else to try.”
Ian Elliot, Chair of the Water Polo Management Group commented, “I would like to express my personal thanks to Phil for the immense amount of time and hard work that he has put into the sport over the past few years. Like many of our volunteers, Phil has combined senior full-time professional employment with a very demanding role in water polo which has utterly consumed his personal time. Without Phil’s contribution, and that of the other volunteers within the sport, the improvements that have been made since 2015 would, very simply, not have been possible.”
