It was Australia who were first to score, taking a 2-0 lead.  But British goalkeeper Jade Smith saved a penalty attempt before Katie Hesketh scored back for the Brits. The scored a further two to win the quarter 4-1.

The second quarter followed suit, the Australians scored two goals before Hesketh converted a shot of her own but 2011 bronze medallists put another two shots away to take an 8-2 lead at half time.

The third quarter was closely fought, with just two goals from Australia breaking the deadlock. They were 10-2 going into the fourth but Hesketh converted her goal attempt to score her hatrick to take the Brits to 14-3 at the final whistle.

Head Coach NIck Hume said: "Breaking into the World top eight teams is a wonderful achielvement and a credit to the players and staff who made it happen. The players have shown an incredible fighting spirit, working tirelessly against Hungary and Russia and proved their talents and ability against Brazil and Uzbekisan, which was superb.

"This result has been the culmination of four years of hard work, often under difficult circumastances but the girls have achived their desired result."

Graeme Thompson, Water Polo National Performance Director for British Swimming said: "The U20s have established another landmark in GB Women's Water Polo journey. Everyone of them should be proud, along with the team staff as well.
