Prevention of Shoulder Injuries in Aquatics Sports

Prevention of Shoulder Injuries in Aquatics Sports

The body of international sports medicine literature confirms that injuries to the shoulder are the most common injury for athletes in all aquatic disciplines. These translate into critical time lost from training and competition, a widely acknowledged factor in our sports. The FINA Sports Medicine Committee (SMC) strongly endorses prevention as the key to this issue and proposes educational initiatives to assist athletes and their support staff to avoid shoulder injuries. This video is a tool that can be used by all aquatic athletes to decrease the incidence of shoulder injuries in aquatic sports. The target audience is athletes, coaches, team physicians and other members of the health care team in the athlete entourage. The video illustrates exercises to strengthen the areas that stabilize the shoulder joint. These are the core muscles, the rotator cuff and the shoulder muscles. All are well illustrated in the video. The FINA Sports Medicine Committee hopes that this can be of use to athletes in the aquatic sports around the world.
Being In The Zone in Sports

Being In The Zone in Sports

Athletes often talk about being "in the zone" and getting an adrenaline rush when competing. Sports science is now discovering exactly what occurs in an athlete's mind during a performance and how these processes can be improved. This video includes a range of interviews with Olympic athletes, coaches and sports psychologists. We learn how athletes stay motivated, deal with pressure and their best methods for maintaining optimum arousal during competition. Fear is a basic human response but the way in which athletes now use it their advantage offers compelling viewing. Hydration in Sports

Hydration in Sports

Without the right fuel at the right time, an athlete's performance inevitably suffers. Understanding the critical roles of nutrition and hydration in sport are explored in this video. Viewers are taken on a diary-type journey as Ironman Triathlete Bradley Conder prepares for the "big day". A leading sports dietician examines how energy sources -- particularly carbohydrates, proteins and sporting drinks -- affect athletes at three different stages: pre-competition, during competition and post-competition. The meticulous nature of a high-performance diet are highlighted throughout the programme, illustrating just how far sports science has come and the constant demands the next generation of athletes will face. This excerpt comes from "Nutrition and Hydration in Sports" from VEA. Purchase your full copy at www.VEA.com.au.
Managing Stress and Pressure During Sports Training

Managing Stress and Pressure During Sports Training

It is often said an athlete's biggest battle is in their own head. But what are the ways in which professional athletes combat these doubts and then actually enhance their performance? This video delves into the minds of Olympic and elite athletes across diving, water polo, athletics and triathlon. Also included are insights from leading coaches and sports psychologists on how athletes can use concentration, visualisation and mental rehearsal techniques to improve performance. What's the best method for overcoming mistakes and how might athletes better train their mind? This showcase program illustrates how sports science has shifted from the physical to mental processes of athletes and what the future may hold for sporting performance.
