Cheltenham secure third place at British Gas Mens Water Polo Championships 2012

Cheltenham beat local rivals Bristol Central 11-8 to take third place in this year's Championships.

Day 1

Bristol Central and Cheltenham lost to Portobello and City of Manchester in their respective semi-finals on the first day of competition at the British Gas Water Polo Championships 2012.

The first semi-final saw Portobello, who are celebrating their centenary this year; take on last year’s champions Bristol Central. Bristol started strongly, winning the first quarter three-one and the second drawing one a piece, with goal keeper Andrew Crawford saving a barrage of Portobello shots. They led going into half time with a two goal cushion.

After the break, the Scotsmen resumed their fight back, claiming two goals to draw the match level before Bristol scored again at the end of quarter three.

With Portobello gaining momentum, it was all to play for in the final quarter. Portobello’s left wing James Scobie scored quickly after the swim off for the Scots, only to have Bristol return the favour just 20 seconds late

Scobie had a penalty saved after a fantastic effort from Crawford, the winger got his revenge scoring twice, his third of the quarter just five seconds from the final whistle to take the game into extra time.

Portobello were first to score in extra time, taking advantage of the man-up, but their efforts were neutralised soon afterwards with Bristol following suit. With nothing separating the teams, the result was determined in the last throw of the game with in form Scobie. Hitting the back of the net with no time to spare, taking the game and a spot in tomorrow’s final 9-8.

Scobie, who scored the crucial goals for Portobello to take them into extra time, and then again for their place in the finals was delighted with his team’s progression.

“It was close at the end, I had to shoot to stay in the game or it was over, so I went for it,” he said. “I decided on a cross gauge lob, it paid of and we took the win. It great to get the win, especially against Bristol as they’re a really good team, but we’ve been playing really well in the Super 5 which gave us the edge at the end of that game. We are confident ahead of the final game. We haven’t lost in six or seven matches so we’re looking forward to the match.”

Their final opposition was determined in the second semi final, where home side City of Manchester faced Cheltenham. Manchester proved dominant in the first quarter, winning 2-1 after goals from Craig Hammond and Rob Rae, and the second a goal apiece to make it 3-2 at half time.

Cheltenham came back from the break with the bit between their teeth, hitting the woodwork before scoring two goals in quick succession from Legge and Taylor. Manchester quickly followed up with a goal from Kirke before Legge got the equaliser.

In form Hammond got another one to put Manchester back ahead before Thomas played some quick ball to score again for Cheltenham to put the teams on evens heading into the final quarter.

Manchester maintained their composure and got a goal shortly before the final buzzer to take the win and the set up their match with Portobello.

Top goal scorer Craig Hammond said: “It was a game of two tales. We felt like we were in control but they kept fighting throughout the game. Cheltenham have a lot of quality players and they showed real fight. I felt like we had good composure throughout the game to play our own game and win the match.

“We’ve definitely got things to work on ahead of the game tomorrow against Portobello but we’ve had good results against them recently but they have been on a string of good results so we’ll need to set ourselves up for the final.”

Day 2

It was an emotional win for Portobello in the final of the British Gas Water Polo Championships as they defeated City of Manchester by eight goals to five.

Both teams came out on the attack but the deadlock was not broken until halfway through the first quarter when Manchester had their attacking play converted by Kocic to go one goal up. Taking advantage of man up, Portobello’s Nuno Oliveira found the back of the net for the Scots with less than two minutes to play. His teammates Ed Grundy and Captain Neilson Rutherford then followed suit, each scoring in the last 60 seconds of the quarter.

Despite winning the swim off, Manchester couldn’t convert their possession into points and Portobello scored on their first play of the quarter, Oliveira again getting the first goal followed by Grundy and Rutherford. A late consolation goal for Kirk of Manchester put the score at 6-2 at half time.

Manchester were not going to go down without a fight and Craig Hammond scored almost immediately for Manchester before Davidson, put distance between the two sides again at the end of the third quarter. Hammond struck home in the dying seconds to put Manchester back in the mix with just eight minutes left to play.

Portobello were not going to let the home side spoil their centenary and their eighth goal by James Scobie put the game out of the Mancunians’ reach. Kirk got a consolation goal for Manchester in the last three minutes but an immense effort by Bojan Donevski in the Portobello goal denied Manchester of their opportunities to score.

“We have tried for years to compete and win this competition but we always fell short,” said Portobello’s Captain Rutherford. “This year has been a good year for us, we’ve worked hard, built up throughout the season and came here believing we could win. We have beaten some of the toughest teams this year and that really gave us confidence and momentum coming into the Championships. I’m absolutely delighted for the whole team and everyone involved.”

City of Manchester’s captain Kevin Williams was gracious in defeat citing that the best team won.

“We never recovered from a bad start,” he said. “We thought we were good enough to win it but I have to congratulate Portobello. They were tactically very strong and they played really well. They wanted this win. Of course we’re disappointed but on the day, the best team won.”

Bristol Central were denied a podium place by a determined Cheltenham in the third and fourth place play off.

Starting strongly, Bristol led the match after the first quarter 3-2 after goals from Thresher, Taylor and Wyatt with Legge scoring twice for Cheltenham.

But a solid second quarter saw Legge score three goals unanswered which were followed by a further two by team mates McAllister and Hayter. Bristol could only respond with two goals for Chris Taylor to keep them in touching distance. At half time Cheltenham led 7-5.

Bristol came out fighting after the break but it took three minutes for them to find the target. They scored two goals before Cheltenham did the same to take the score to 9-7 in the final quarter.

In the last quarter Cheltenham’s Joel and Mike Thomas got a goal each to take the tally to 11. A consolation penalty for Bristol wasn’t enough to keep them in the game and the final score was 11-8 to Cheltenham.

Water Polo Club signs landmark partnership with City Council

Saturday 18 February saw Manchester City Council and the City of Manchester Water Polo Club begin a five year partnership that will help develop and promote the sport across the city.

Manchester City Council, the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) and British Swimming have jointly invested in the City of Manchester Water Polo Club to encourage everyone to get involved with the sport, from absolute beginners to elite athletes.

The new partnership will see new coaching programmes being introduced across the city giving both young people and adults the opportunity to try the sport for the first time or develop their water polo skills with the chance to play more regularly.

A primary and secondary schools Water Polo League will be created along with a Manchester Water Polo Club League to encourage people to get involved with the sport and give them the chance to compete. To help the leagues develop strong sustainable community water polo clubs will be supported in Harpurhey, Moston, Wythenshawe and Gorton.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, executive member for culture and leisure, said, “This partnership will help water polo grow in the city and will ensure we not only support existing athletes but inspire a whole new wave of participants.

“The local clubs will give people who have never even considered the sport the chance to take part and compete. Manchester is a city that loves sport and I‘m sure this development will lead to the city becoming the centre of British water polo.”

David Sparkes, Chief Executive of British Swimming said: “Manchester has been a great supporter of swimming and water polo and signing this agreement today is another landmark in our journey together.

“Manchester has demonstrated how you can build better and healthier communities through sport and this has shown how using water polo in particular, a sport widely practised now in Great Britain bit one of great heritage can engage with young people who can have great fun whilst playing a tough game and keeping fit.”

Mike Glover, Chairman of the City of Manchester Water Polo Club said. "We are excited about this opportunity to increase the number of children who will be getting involved in water polo in their own neighbourhoods, which would not be possible without the support of Manchester City Council and ASA"

2012 is an exciting year to be involved in sport; with the eyes of the world on London and the clock ticking down it is the perfect opportunity to become involved and volunteer.

It is time to get excited and celebrate the hard work volunteers do whilst encouraging more people to get actively involved and support their local community.

Student Volunteering Week is a campaign led by Volunteering England which raises awareness of volunteers in further or higher education and aims to get more students involved as volunteers across the country.

Student Volunteering Week runs from the 20 to 26 February 2012 and offers the perfect opportunity for all student volunteers, or those who want to become volunteers, to become more engaged with their local communities. This is your opportunity to have fun and try something new!

Do you want to know that you are helping to make a real difference to the people around you?

Volunteering not only aids local communities and organisations, it enhances your employability and enables you to develop the personal skills that employers will value.

Volunteering also gives you the opportunity to apply your school, college or university learning to a new context, develop your ability to work as part of a team, build your confidence and self-esteem while making new friends and most importantly having fun.

You could gain experience of working on a committee, fundraising or organising events, developing skills which could benefit you in the future.

Check the ASA website

Contact your Regional ASA Officers

Contact your local volunteering centre

The future growth of the aquatic disciplines depends heavily on the skills, knowledge and commitment of its volunteer workforce.

It may be something as simple as providing IT support, helping with club admin, become a technical official or helping to run aquatic competitions.

European Championships Water Polo - GBR Women 13 v 11 Germany

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team finished their 2012 European Championships on a high, beating old rivals Germany to finish seventh overall.

Having improved with each performance in the group stage, the British women approached their clash with the Germans in high spirits. And while their opponents held them to a 10-10 tie after four quarters of regular time, the British women proved too strong in overtime, ultimately sealing a 13-11 win.

While they were competing at the European showpiece for the first time in 15 years, victory ensured the Brits their best result since finishing seventh out of seven teams in 1987. And head coach Szilveszter Fekete insisted the teams' performances in Eindhoven had proved they could be a threat amongst the European elite.

"Our team showed that we are now in the picture of European water polo," said Fekete. "As I predicted after our first match, we didn’t finish last. We had good competitive games against such strong teams here. The first game was tough, but all the tournament we played good polo and everyone has commented on the progress we have made. We lost against Russia and Holland but we can improve and be even better and that's a good sign for the Olympics."

Centre forward Angie Winstanley-Smith added: “Our team is very pleased about its progress during this tournament. It proves that our hard work is paying off.

"We're really happy with the result but it's just the start of things to come. The team spirit has been phenominal and we're looking forward to training hard and getting better. Regarding the Olympics, it’s great for us to be there, particularly as women’s water polo is still a small sport in our country. We are all excited about that opportunity.

The Brits started strongly as Ciara Gibson-Byrne opened the scoring for the third time in four matches and Frankie Snell added a second shortly after. But the Germans – who lost to Great Britain twice at last season’s Four Nations Invitational in Manchester – weren’t about to roll over and pulled level at the end of the first quarter.

Fiona McCann and Chloe Wilcox edged the Brits ahead again but Germany reacted fast, turning the match on its head to establish a 6-4 lead half way through the second quarter. Gibson-Byrne was on hand to stop the rot with her second of the match and with the first half drawing to a close, Fran Clayton powered home an outside shot to restore parity once more at 6-6.

The Brits took control in the third period, recovering from conceding in the first minute to take a 9-7 lead through Snell, Gibson-Byrne and Lisa Gibson.

The British women had the finishing post in sight after Wilcox added her second to give them a three goal lead but the Germans put in a gusty display in the final quarter to draw level once more, 10-10 at the end of four quarters.

Winstanley-Smith made an immediate impact in the first of two three-minute periods of overtime, earning a penalty – which Snell duly put home. Less than a minute later, Winstanley-Smith earned an exclusion in the pit and after receiving the ball, drove it into the corner for a two-goal advantage.

Snell capped an impressive individual performance by scoring her fourth of the match shortly after and the Brits could taste victory again, 13-10 ahead with three minutes to play.

They weren’t going to relinquish their three goal advantage for a second time and while Germany converted an outside shot with 30 seconds remaining, the Brits held on for a deserved victory.

British Gas GBR Women's Water Polo Team 13 - 11 Germany (2-2, 4-4, 3-1, 1-3) (3-0, 0-1)
European Championships Water Polo - GBR Women 6 v 12 Netherlands

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team left another signal of their potential in a competitive final group match of the 2012 European Championships in Eindhoven.

Playing against reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands – who had the support of a partisan crowd in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Arena – the British women were tied at 6-6 half way through the third quarter.

The Dutch eventually weathered the storm and closed out a 12-6 victory to reach the quarter finals.

But – having also impressed against defending European champions Russia on Friday – the Brits will have their heads held high as they prepare for Tuesday’s seventh / eighth place playoff against Germany.

And head coach Szilveszter Fekete admitted he had been pleased with his charges’ performance so far in Eindhoven, given their lack of competitive matches since qualifying for the Championships last year.

“When we came to these European Championships we hadn’t played any official matches since September 2011,” said Fekete. “And here we had to play title holders Russia, Olympic champions Netherlands and Hungary in our group – a very difficult task for our squad. So I’m happy because we led during the first half of the game.”

For the third match running, the British women took the lead in the first quarter as Ciara Gibson-Byrne calmly placed a lob shot into the corner. The Dutch hit back with an equaliser but it was the Brits who led at the first interval after captain Fran Leighton added a second goal from the pit for a 2-1 lead.

Fiona McCann put the British two goals up in the first move of the second quarter before the hosts began to find their form, pulling level and moving a goal ahead themselves. But the Brits stuck with their experienced opponents as second goals from Leighton and McCann kept them within touching distance, 6-5 behind at half-time.

Angie Winstanley-Smith’s bounce shot pulled the British level early in the third quarter but with the match hanging in the balance, it was the Dutch who broke through and pulled clear to 10-6 with eight minutes remaining.

The Brits pushed hard to reduce the deficit but Dutch goalkeeper Ilse van der Meijden enjoyed her best period of the game, denying a number of attempts as her side eventually secured the win.
European Championships Water Polo - GBR Women 10 v 15 Russia

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team gave defending champions Russia a thorough scare in their second match of the European Championships in Eindhoven.

Competing in the European showpiece for the first time since 1997, the Brits were never out of touch against last year’s World Championship bronze medallists and took plenty of credit from a 15-10 defeat.

Having failed to reach top gear in their opening match against Hungary on Wednesday, the British women put in a much improved performance against a Russian side who had defeated hosts and Olympic champions the Netherlands in their first game.

Goalkeeper Rosie Morris excelled between the sticks with a number of world class saves, but head coach Szilveszter Fekete admitted he was encouraged with the overall team performance as the Brits won their first quarter for the tournament, taking the third period 3-1.

“Today we have shown that we can play water polo,” said Fekete. “My team performed well although they did not have much international practise during the preparation. That may have been the reason why my players were too nervous in the opening match.”

Captain Fran Leighton added: “I’m pleased with the team’s performance. We played very well today and it gives us some confidence for the upcoming six months until the Olympics. Our goalkeeper was very good, and we were a bit unlucky with shots on post and bar.”

For the second match running, the British started on a high with Angie Winstanley-Smith scoring from close range for a 1-0 lead before Leighton showed good strength in the pit to edge the Brits 2-1 ahead minutes later. But it was the Russians who ended the first period in the ascendancy, scoring a couple of outside shots as they pulled away to a 6-2 lead at the first break.

Russia continued to apply the pressure in the second period but momentum gradually swung back to the Brits with Leighton and Vicki Hawkins scoring and a penalty bouncing agonisingly back off the post as the first half ended 9-4.

There was further frustration in the early stages of the third quarter as Great Britain saw shots crash off the post then the bar on consecutive man-ups.

But after Russia added their 10th goal, the Brits began to break through their opponents’ dogged defence. Quick-thinking from Frankie Snell saw her burst into the pit and convert before a Fran Clayton bounce shot and bullet from Ciara Gibson-Byrne put the Brits back in the match, trailing 10-7 with one quarter remaining.

Gibson-Byrne, Snell and Chloe Wilcox scored three more for the Brits but with their opponents pushing to claw back the deficit, Russia sat back and caught them on the counter, adding another five efforts to secure the win.

European Championships Water Polo - GBR Women 9 v 19 Hungary

The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team fell to a battling defeat in their first European Championship match for 17 years in Eindhoven.

Having qualified for the finals for the first time since 1997, the British women put in a brave performance against major championship regulars Hungary – who lifted the World Championship title as recently as 2005 – before ultimately going down 19–9.

Both teams were desperate to begin their campaigns on a positive note and the Hungarians were loathe to take their opponents lightly.

And British head coach Szilveszter Fekete admitted his players hadn't reached top gear in their opener in Eindhoven.

"We're happy to be playing at this level but it was our first game and we were too nervous and missed some possibilities," said former Hungarian international Fekete. We lost a bit of confidence after having the early advantage but the movement was okay so hopefully we can improve for our next match. It was our first official game for a while as well so missed getting back into it."

British player Rebecca Kershaw added: "In future games, we need to be more clinical in our finishing but there are a lot of positives to take. We're going to build on our performance here and look to improve in our next two group matches."

The Brits were in dreamland after taking an early lead through Ciara Gibson-Byrne but Hungary wrestled their way back into the match and quickly built momentum, pulling away to 4-1 at the first break.
Centre forwards Angie Winstanley-Smith and Lisa Gibson both scored from the pit in the second quarter as the British found their feet again.

But while Fiona McCann also put away a lob shot in the dying seconds, the Brits struggled to contain the Hungarian attack who added four goals to their tally to lead 8-4 at half-time.
Hungary were determined not to take their foot off the gas and put the result beyond doubt with four unanswered goals in the opening four minutes of the third quarter.

The Brits found their form again as Chloe Wilcox put away a penalty and further goals from captain Fran Leighton and Gibson meant they approached the final quarter trailing 15-7.
Well-placed outside shots from McCann and Frankie Snell ensured the Brits scored in every quarter but their opponents were ruthless in front of the cage once more and added another four to finish the game.
Russia scored five goals in the final quarter to deny the British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo team a memorable victory in their World League qualifier in Kirishi. After slipping to an early deficit, the British men had the bit between their teeth and outscored their opponents in both the second and third quarters to tie the match at 7-7 with eight minutes remaining.

An impressive last quarter from the home team saw them secure the points with a 12-8 victory (4-1, 2-3, 1-3, 5-1) but the Brits left Russia with their heads held high after a competitive performance. And having beaten Georgia and impressed against world champions Italy at the end of 2011, head coach Cristian Iordache admitted the team were improving with each game.

"The progress of the team was very obvious from tonight's performance," said Iordache. "We need to build on this by continuing to play top teams and to get experience of playing a balanced game for the whole match.

"I'm pleased with the performance and we'll look forward to the return match when they come to Manchester in March."

Captain Craig Figes added: "The performance was really good for most of the game but unfortunately the Russians took advantage of some of our mistakes. We will take a lot of positives from the game but we know we need to continue the hard work we've been putting in."

The Russians started strongly and while Figes - voted British man-of-the-match by the FINA delegates - scored an early penalty, the home team held a 4-1 advantage at the end of the first period.

But the Brits fought back resolutely in the second period as Figes added another two to complete his hat-trick and Rob Parker got in on the act with a bounce shot.

Momentum was with the away side as they started the third quarter and Parker scored his second before the home side responded to extend their lead to 7-5.

Quick thinking from goalkeeper Matt Holland saw him release Alex Parsonage on the counter, who held his nerve after swimming clear to pull the British within a goal of their opponents. Minutes later, Joe O'Regan levelled the tie with an unstoppable outside shot into the roof of the net.

The atmosphere was electric at the final quarter swim-off with the match hanging on a knife-edge. Russia drew first blood, taking their time to convert a man-up and the home team extended their lead shortly after as another effort crept into the corner.

An outside shot and two more goals on the man-up followed as the Russians put the result beyond doubt, before Parsonage scored a late consolation from a tight angle.

The Brits travel to world champions Italy for their next World League qualifier on 6 March 2012 before they get the chance for revenge as they host Russia in their final fixture at Manchester Aquatics Centre on Tuesday 20 March 2012
Sky TV coup for British Water Polo League

The British Water Polo League has achieved another historic and exciting landmark with the news that men’s and women’s Super 5s matches at Manchester Aquatics Centre on 21 and 22 January are to be screened by Sky TV.

It will be the first time for many years that club games in the UK have been televised. And BWPL chairman David Andrews said today: “It’s a massive coup for our organisation – and perfectly timed, too, as we begin the year of the Olympics.

“This is something we have been working towards for many months. We believe it is a vital move in encouraging the development of water polo from grass roots level upwards throughout this country as well as hopefully opening up opportunities for much-needed sponsorship.”

David Sparkes, British Swimming and ASA Chief Executive, said: “With the British water polo team returning to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1956, I am delighted that through the hard work of the British Water Polo League we will see the game that we invented showcased on Sky TV – and with some of the best clubs in the land battling it out to be crowned league champions.”

The action at MAC will be recorded and an edited “Match of the Day” style programme shown by Sky on dates that will be advertised on the BWPL website.

Clubs are urged to spread the word among their members and encourage as many people as possible to attend the Manchester event in person!

Fulfilling Club fixtures

We wish to remind all Clubs of the requirements of the league regarding cancellations. This season has seen an unprecedented number of cancelled fixtures, some with just a couple of days notice.

Host clubs often have to hire their pool specifically for matches at an agreed hourly rate which may require giving notice of cancellation within a specified period. It is unreasonable for host Clubs to bear such costs of cancellation by away teams.

There is a significant number of fixtures for some Club teams still to be recorded in the respective League administration areas.

Rules regarding arranging, re-arranging, delayed and unfulfilled matches are covered in our League Constitution.

Club Fixtures Secretaries are urged to re-read it to avoid incurring fines / forfeits for rule breaches.
Seagulls secure silver at ASA SW Water Polo Championships 2011 - 16 & Under Male

Seagulls report that their 16&U water polo squad has ensured another first for the Christchurch based water polo team by securing the club’s second silver medal in ASA South West Club Championships on 18 December at Exeter. This is the first time that the club has won two medals in a single season in the regional championships and placed them as the region's second ranked 16&U club overall behind perennial champions Cheltenham.

The tournament featured the champions of both Gloucestershire (Cheltenham) and Devon (Barnstaple) as well as sides from Exeter and Paignton.

With just 7 regular first team players available Seagulls boosted their squad to just 9 with a couple of late drafts from their 14&U squad. Starting well Seagulls controlled the pool to gain a close fought 9-5 victory over Exeter in their opening match. In their second, Seagulls played a very young and talented Paignton side. The Christchurch side struggled to find a rhythm and won through only by their strength as individuals rather than by strong team play.

In their third match Seagulls played Devon Champions – Barnstaple – the winner would take at least a silver medal. Having regrouped after their lack lustre early performance Seagulls started at a breathtaking pace. Reverting to their fast flowing counter attacking style Seagulls scored almost at will in the first half ending 7-1 in the lead. The Christchurch youngsters started the second half just as strongly scoring 7 unanswered goals in a devastating passage of just 5 minutes. Barnstaple rallied and scored two late goals but the result was never in doubt, 14-3 win to Seagulls.

In their last game Seagulls faced the other unbeaten team in the tournament, Cheltenham. The first half started with both sides exerting a strong physical pressure on their opponents. The strength of both sides defensive game meant that unusually there was no score until mid way through the first half when Seagulls scored from a swift counter attack. Cheltenham regrouped and in a fine display of attacking water polo scored four times to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Seagulls were rocked by the late scores but switching tactics early in the second half cut the deficit to 4-2. By this time the pace and physicality of the contest were immense. The crowd at the Pyramids pool in Exeter were treated to a first class display from two very talented sides. The game flowed from end to end Cheltenham again extended their lead only for Seagulls to score immediately from the next play - 5-3 going into the last two minutes of time. Seagulls stole the ball from the restart and in a swift attacking movement hit the bar only for the rebound to be put the wrong side of the post. The moment was gone and Cheltenham scored with the final play of the match to run out worthy 6-3 winners.

After the tournament Rob Webber, water polo coach at Seagulls said, “Silver again. That’s two this season for the 16&Us and 18&Us. This moves us on from the single silver we took in the 14&Us last year. The kids are disappointed but when you see the game played at such a tempo with very high skills you can’t help but feel proud about their performance against one of the top 3 sides in the country. 2011 has been a tremendous year for us. Two regional silvers in the club championships as well as gold and silver medals for our players who are part of the SW regional squads that did so well at the national championships. We’ve had more players making the GB talent set up including our first girl – Kathy Rogers. We now need to consolidate the game at the club and bring on a talented bunch of 8 and 9 year olds who are more than capable of matching the exploits of their senior club mates.”

Seagulls U16 Squad:
Mikey Kingsley (gk), Charlie Roberts, Jackson Mullins, Sam Webber, Elliot Wilks, Cianan Mann, David Gallagher, James Stephenson, Peter Gallagher
ASA SW Region Water Polo Club Championships 2011 - 16&U Male

James Baker, ASA SW Region Water Polo Secretary, reports on the final Club Championships of the ASA SW 2011 Calendar year held at the Pyramids Leisure Centre at Exeter on 18 December:

Exeter lost out to Christchurch in the opening match of the Tournament 9-5, after somewhat of a come-back having been 7-0 down at half time. Cheltenham easily overcame Barnstaple with come very confident play. Barnstaple were also in competitive spirits defeating Exeter 8-4 in the fourth match of the Tournament.

Cheltenham and Christchurch were dominant, the former managing a 19-2 victory over Paignton, and a 20-1 drubbing of Exeter, whilst Christchurch achieved a 8-3 victory over Paignton and a 14-3 win over Barnstaple. This set up two exciting final matches of the Tournament.

The penultimate match between Cheltenham and Christchurch would determine the medallists - Christchurch really took the game to Cheltenham with Elliot Wilks standing out as the lead 'play-maker' for his team and making a number of crucial 'steals' that kept the score line to 4-1 in Cheltenham's favour at the half way point. The key difference between the teams was a new arrival to Cheltenham in the shape of Hungarian B Jakapovic - certainly a player to watch for the future in Cheltenham's ranks. After a minor altercation, Jakapovic stepped up his game and scored two goals within a minute to put the game beyond Christchurch's grasp, and secured the win 6-3.

The final match between Paignton and Exeter saw a spirited Paignton team stage a spectacular come-back from being behind at the half way stage to keeping their cool when the Exeter team panicked and let their heads drop as Paignton cruised to a 7-5 victory, including a hat-trick from Cody Plumridge.

Highest Goal-Scorer of the Tournament - John Hatton (Cheltenham)
Best Player of the Tournament - B Jakapovic (Cheltenham)
Best Goal-Keeper of the Tournament - M Kingsley (Christchurch)

Overall Result

(1) Cheltenham
(2) Christchurch
(3) Barnstaple
(4) Paignton
(5) Exeter
(6) Devonport

Dorset Water Polo League Ladies Day is a success

Dave Beradley reports on a very successful ladies day held at St Marys School Shaftesvury on Sunday 4 December 2011:

"Despite several players' absence due to taking part in a Tournament and Regional training, 37 Girls / Ladies attended, aged from 9 years old upwards.

"After a short training session, the girls were divided into 4 teams of roughly equal ability, to take part in a "round robin" tournament. Older players passed on their experience to the younger ones. The number taking part means there are enough players within the county to make up decent teams, although they are spread out over a number of clubs.

"It is hoped that this 'get together' will inspire them. The League will do its best to provide a structure for them all to continue playing and enjoying their polo."
FINA World League Water Polo Preliminary - GB Men 6 v 14 Italy

The British Gas GBR Men’s Water Polo Team showed their fighting spirit in a battling defeat at home to World Champions Italy in the FINA World League Preliminary match.

Britain’s Craig Figes, Joe O’Regan, Rob Parker, Will Middleton and Ciaran James were on target in front of their home crowd in Manchester in their debut in the competition but succumbed to the World Champions in a final score of 14-6 (5-1, 4-1, 2-3, 3-1).

After the performance British Captain Figes said: “The first half was quite tough for us and it did take us a long time to get into the match. But this is our debut in the World League and it is great to play at this level.

“The second half allowed us to show our potential. We really pushed them hard and I think we performed well overall. We will learn from playing the World Champions and I’m excited for our next match.”

The first quarter saw Italy take the game out hard despite losing the swim-off to Sean King. Alex Giorgetti scored the first goal for Italy as they took a lead of four goals before the Brits scored.

O’Regan was the athlete to get the Brits on the score sheet with a good goal in a man up situation. The quarter finished 5-1 to the Italian team.

The high-paced match continued into the second quarter with Valentino Gallo opening the scoring almost immediately. Rob Parker brought one back for Great Britain with a great goal under a lot of pressure from the Italian defence.

The Italians showed their dominance in the quarter by scoring another three goals to lead the match 9-2 at the half way point.

In the opening of the second half Italy’s Deni Fiorentini won the swim off and moved quickly towards the British defence but the Brits showed some good triple tagging of Olexander Sadovyy to stop ball going in the net.

Figes opened his scoring account with an impressive shot to put goal number three on the score sheet for the Brits. The Captain and James’ secured another two goals as they brought the score to 11-5 as the game entered the final quarter.

Italy took the swim-off and quickly got a penalty. Goalkeeper Ed Scott couldn’t stop the power of the shot as the Italians increased their lead. Will Middleton scored a good long distance goal to secure Britain’s sixth goal of the match.

The Italian team scored another two in the final minutes of the game as they finished the victors with a score of 14-6.
